Labeling:Article Title: Co-localization of glycine and calbindin D-28k in the vestibular ganglion of the rat. Article Snippet: The primary afferent neurons of the vestibular ganglion (VG) convey sensory information from hair cells of the semicircular canals and otolith organs to the vestibular nuclei, the adjacent brain stem and the cerebellum.. According to various physiological and morphological parameters, VG neurons can be divided into different subpopulations.. In mammals it has been shown that perikaryal size and axon diameter of primary vestibular afferents (PVA) are correlated1 and there is evidence that the larger cells exhibit predominantly spontaneous discharge patterns and more phasic response dynamics with respect to natural vestibular stimulation.2–5 The largest VG neurons constitute a subgroup of afferents which in the periphery give rise exclusively to calyx endings on type I vestibular hair cells6–10 and which appear to terminate mainly in rostral parts of the central vestibular nuclear complex.11 These morphological and functional features may also be reflected in certain neurochemical properties of VG neurons, providing tools for the selective identification of subpopulations and potential clues to their functional roles in vestibular signal transmission. |
